Information On Eczema Natural Treatment Options

By George Wagner

Eczema is a collective term referring to a combination of several health conditions which cause skin irritation and/or inflammation. Atopic eczema also referred to as atopic dermatitis is the most prevalent type. There are several other types too. Atopic dermatitis usually have a tendency to cause asthma and hay fever among other allergic reactions to the body.

The disease affects many Americans. It is approximated that 10-20 percent of infants are affected, while adults are affected up to 3 percent of the population. That is why a lot of research has been going on in conventional and alternative medicine to develop more effective treatment options. Eczema natural treatment options have become more popular today. Most infants outgrow the disease at age ten upwards, while other exhibit symptoms up to later stages. Proper treatment can control the disease easily.

The disease can affect the whole body or a specific part. Either way, wherever it occurs, it almost always causes an itchy sensation. Itching may precede the rush, but when the rush finally appears, it affects wrists, feet, hands, knees, backs, and faces mostly. The areas that are affected look thickened and scaly and are often dry. In people with light skins, the place appears reddish initially before turning brown in color.

The exact cause of this condition has not been determined yet. However, it has often been linked to an overreaction of the immune system of the body to irritants. The symptoms observed are caused by the response of the immune system. Prevalence is higher in families with histories of asthma or other allergies. Certain conditions and substances have also been known to cause this condition in some people.

There is no specific test meant for diagnosing eczema. Dermatologists, primary care givers, and pediatricians rely on visual inspection and interviewing of patients to make diagnoses. Specific irritants and triggers for the reaction can be determined by running allergy tests on individuals who have preexisting allergies.

Infections can result if itching is not treated. Therefore, many options of treatment aim at preventing and relieving itching. Dry skin should be moisturized with natural oils like coconut oil. Oils must be applied when the skin is damp like when one has just taken a shower. Damp skin promotes moisture retention.

Another natural way of treating the condition is eating a healthy diet. One should eat a raw food diet that has a lot of organic foods. Processed food like gluten, sugar, alcohol, dairy, and caffeine should be avoided. Tests should be run to determine if any specific food needs to be avoided. One should also drink a lot of water daily. Sixty four ounces of water a day is recommendable.

Another major cause associated with the condition is body toxicity. People consume toxins every and it is important to indulge in detoxification often. Some of the ways detoxification can be accomplished are diet, exercise, and massage. Physical exercise leads to sweating which eliminates a lot of toxins. Herbal tea and other supplements can also help.
