Having The Right Tools Speeds Drywall Installation And Finishing For Home Improvement

By Gary Stossel

When it is time to complete a home improvement project that involves the hanging or finishing of drywall, one needs to have the correct tools to complete the job. Many of these tools are available as rental equipment. These tools can help to lift, support, install and finish these sheets overhead or on walls.

Screw Gun: Professionals use screws to install drywall. Screws offer several advantages, with the primary being that they will not loosen and pop like nails. They offer a better system for holding drywall in place. The screw gun has a clutch that can be set to prevent overdriving screws so they do not hold the drywall in place properly.

Panel Jack: A panel lift or jack is designed to hold drywall in place as one attaches it to the ceiling. The job is made easier and the danger of dropping a panel is practically eliminated. Some lifts provide the optional tilt that allows the panel to be installed on a cathedral ceiling or other type of sloping ceiling.

Tape Gun: This device automatically places an undercoat of mud under the tape as it is applied. The gun helps to extent the worker's reach so he or she can spend more time on the floor and less on stilts. With larger projects, such machines help to eliminate many hours required to complete the job.

Hopper Guns: These devices can be used in conjunction with a compressor to apply texture before paint is applied. Orange peel texture is one of the most common with this type of gun. Do it yourself homeowners like this type of texture as it can help to cover mistakes in the taping and bedding of the drywall.

Compressor: In addition to operating hopper guns, the compressor can be used to operate pneumatic tools. It can power a pneumatic nail gun for use in framing and when the job is ready for finish work, it can be used for a pin nailer to attach small pieces of trim. In the garage or shop, the compressor can also operate air wrenches and paint sprayers.

Many homeowners will only do a home improvement project involving drywall once or twice in a lifetime. They generally do not have the specialized tools needed to accomplish these tasks. With an equipment rental store, they can lease the equipment for a few hours, days or weeks to complete the task as needed. The finished job has a more professional look and the job is easier with the right tools.
