By Raymond Brooks

Discrimination in the workplace is a phenomenon that has slowly been managed. However, there are still some places where people are discriminated against because they are different from the rest of the people in an office. Among the common type of discrimination are gender and race discrimination. In the modern world, the sexual orientation has diversified which has led to the recognition of the Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. However, the level of discrimination against this community has also increased. The law mandates that all employees be treated in the same way regardless of their race, sexual orientation and gender. Here are some of the steps you should take to avoid LGBT workplace discrimination:

You should start by sensitizing your employees on the different sexual orientations that are found in the society. In some cases, people discriminate against this community because they fail to understand them. Ensure that every employee understands that this community exists. You can achieve this goal by having campaigns that educate your employees on the different types of sexual orientations.

Rules should be set to prohibit any form of segregation. These rules should be specific to ensure that the workers understand the standing of the company on the issues of segregation. In a company where there are strict rules on discrimination, the workers will automatically avoid displaying characters related to segregation.

You should come up with consequences which the employees will be facing when they discriminate against any community. There are two rewards you can give to people to motivate them. These include either positive or negative rewards. You need to set punitive measures to ensure that you finish a certain behavior among your employees.

What most people do not know is that there are laws that protect people within this unique community. People who are found going against such law should be charged accordingly. Most people have not been well informed about this. Educate your employees about these legal laws and the consequences of breaking them.

Encourage an accommodative culture within the organization. The management should accommodate people from the different races, gender and even sexual orientation. When the management accommodates this community, the rest will also emulate similar behaviors. It is also important that the management assigns duties and responsibility with fairness and equality.

Among the main areas where the LGBT community is discriminated is during the recruitment stage. The people that are involved in the recruitment process should be open-minded. They should recognize the LGBT community as part of the society. You should also ensure that you vet the recruitment process to ensure that there are no discriminatory practices.

In a work setting, it is important that everyone is treated fairly and equally. The LGBT community has not been accepted in a majority of the workplaces. They are treated differently which affects their performance at work. In some cases, when one is from this community, they are rarely given a chance to work in certain companies. You need to ensure that within your company, this group is treated fairly. The article highlights some of the ways that you can create a working environment where everyone in the workplace respects and treats this community fairly.
