Different Farm Loans And How They Work

By Sandra Hill

Farming is considered by many to be one of the most important businesses there is. These are the operations that feed and help clothe the nation. If we had to import the meats, fruits, and vegetables we eat every day, our diets would change drastically. As such, it is in everyone's best interest to make sure farming operations remain as stable and secure as possible. This means that the federal government must sometimes provide farm loans to make that happen.

Some farmers lease the land they work every year and have no interest in owning acreage. Others have owned their farms for generations. Land is an important asset to them, and if they have to borrow money after a poor crop year, the acreage provides them with the collateral needed. Most prefer to avoid borrowing against their land however.

Sometimes an individual wants to get into the farming business but does not have the necessary capital to actually purchase the land and equipment necessary. This person can go to a lender with a business plan and apply for the funds to begin a farming operation. In order to be approved, the individual will have to prove to the lender that they have the expertise needed to make the operation a success.

While some farmers are perfectly happy with the amount of land they own, others are more ambitious and want to expand their operations as often as possible. Lenders have private funds of more than a million dollars to lend an individual with good credit and a proven track record. Farmers who don't qualify for the private funds may be able to get over a quarter million dollars to expand their operations.

For those who produce crops that require storage, there are special funds available to help build the necessary structures needed to store produce until it is ready for market. If you are farming certain crops such as corn, wheat, peanuts, soybeans, hay, vegetables, and fruits, you may quality for up to as much as five hundred thousand dollars.

Many farmers employ individuals from other countries to work in their fields. These migrant workers are not citizens and are only granted temporary visas to come into the country. Farmers who use these workers must comply with all government regulations regarding their employment and housing. There is money available for the farming business to improve the living conditions they offer the temporary workers.

Commercial fishermen are very important for the country's food supply. This can be a very volatile business that is dependent on good weather and the health of the wildlife they catch. Fisheries can borrow funds to improve or repair their fishing boats.

Many times people put food on the table without realizing what it took to get it there, but no one should underestimate the importance of farming businesses. The more successful farmers are, the healthier the economy and the nation is.
