Faith Building Apologetics Articles Are Important

By Kathleen Martin

The Christian life is based on faith, in believing what you have not seen. Apologetics (a term which comes from a Greek word meaning a spoken defense) is the term used for collected opinions that support the validity of the Bible and the deity of Jesus. Apologetics articles are written treatises, which may have been spoken at first or created for a publication or website.

It's important for all believers to take advantage of the thoughts and teachings of those who have gone before. Reading or hearing how strong men and women of God defend their beliefs helps strengthen the faith of Christians of all ages and stations of life. This doesn't mean that you need a divinity degree, just that you may benefit from having a clear idea of what Christianity is.

As it says in the Bible, believers are often asked for the reason for their personal joy and peace. They are also often attacked by others with different beliefs or no belief system at all. It's a sad fact that many good Christian kids lose their faith in college because they aren't given the tools to defend it or even truly understand it. People without strong biblical foundations crumble under the pressure of other world views.

Apologists also need to learn how to 'argue' in the old sense of the word. 'Making the argument' used to mean presenting a clear opinion, not engaging in heated exchanges. The Bible tells us to defend our faith in love and gentleness, not in acrimony or exclusiveness. In order to debate honest questions gently and calmly, believers need to truly understand their own position.

It's fun to study written expositions of biblical truth. There is a wealth of information online. Of course, it all needs to be assessed against scripture, since anyone can post on the internet. Of course, this kind of study is not needed to defend your faith; you can rely on your own experiences with the Holy Spirit. Your life as a believer is your personal testimony and can be very compelling to those who hear it.

Learning apologetics is fascinating, since believers will encounter ideas they may never had considered or articulated. Knowing that Jesus changed the world in a ministry that lasted only three years and extended less than a hundred miles from His boyhood home is inspiring. Knowing that millions of people throughout the last 2000 years have been willing to sacrifice and die in His name also lets us know that this was no ordinary man but truly the son of God.

Reading the Bible regularly is key to living a Christian life, and following the teachings of wise believers enriches that practice. It's often hard to understand biblical characters like Melchizadek, or even David, a flawed leader who nevertheless understood the heart of God.

Each article should be focused on one point, which makes it easy to ponder new ideas and commit them to memory. Often a person with a question or problem will find an answer in what they read seemingly by chance. Writing apologetics is perfect for sharing some of the insights gained from study or from interaction with the Holy Spirit.
