But this changed when the needs of man became great. The need to look for new land and more resources became a priority for many kingdoms during the middle ages. The wooden ships were built bigger and stronger in order to withstand the great pressures and challenges that the ocean often.

The coming of the modern era trigger something that would change the world forever. The event that pushed the middle ages towards the modern world is called the industrial revolution. During this time period, which is during the late 18th to the closing days of the 19th century, machines and things that people made were further improved upon.

There was one invention that defined the entire industrial revolution. This invention was called the steam engine and it has been the shining light of transportation. With it, the boats that took months or even years to transport cargo only took a few days or weeks at best. Along with it, the train was created with it was the basis for its engine.
