All There Is To Know About Thailand's Full Moon Party

By Jordan Ebor

Koh Phangan is a smaller island in southern Thailand, not far from the bigger and more popular, Koh Samui. The island is most famous for its monthly Full Moon Party. I have been lucky enough to be on Koh Phangan a few times when there was a full moon. The best times to go to Koh Phangan is probably December to March, but the Full Moon Party happens every month of the year. Koh Phangan is a place where travellers come to chill, relax and hang out at the many beaches. However, the place really comes alive during the Full Moon Party.

My first time to visit Koh Phangan was in December 2008. This was around Christmas and it was a full moon. I saw crazy scenes that made me love the place. My friend Chrissie and I whilst we were there went to Haad Rin Beach for the Full Moon Party, We actually danced from sunset until dawn on the beach. Whilst at Haad Rin Beach for the Full Moon Party I enjoyed a variety of food and drinks. I had a chance to taste the Thai meals for the first time. They were indeed mouth-watering! I enjoyed beer while my friend Chrissie drank cocktails.

One thing that gets you as a newbie is the amount of people that attend the Full Moon Party. There must have been at least 30,000 people there the first time I was there. There is music always pumping around the beach and thousands of people dancing the night away. The Full Moon Party sees plenty of street performers or buskers keeping the crowd entertained, and everyone just gets on the "buckets". A Full Moon Party bucket is a concoction of different spirits and plenty of Red Bull. Oh and don't miss the fire rope jumping. You will soon see why it is well worth a look.

Chrissie had told me about this hotel she liked called the Seaview Sunrise Resort, which is right on Haad Rin Beach. We stayed there the first Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan and I loved the location and the accommodation so I have just booked the same place every time! Koh Phangan has several hotels, hostels and resorts though that are within close proximity of Haad Rin Beach. I have never really found it an issue getting accommodation in Koh Phangan for the Full Moon Party, but you might consider getting your accommodation sorted in advance as the island will be packed when the Full Moon Party is on.

So how do you get there? Well with no flights to Koh Phangan, you have to go via a place called Surat Thani on the mainland or from the island of Koh Samui. Once you get to either of those two places you can get a ferry over to Koh Phangan. There is also an overnight train or bus that will get you to Surat Thani from Bangkok, but you still have to get the ferry to Koh Phangan after that. Hey, there are also Thailand Full Moon Party tour operators that will organise everything for you if you don't want to do it all yourself.

Thailand's famous Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan became world famous after the Leonardo De Caprio, The Beach, and I have to admit that you really have to see it to understand what it is like. So make sure that the Koh Phangan Full Moon Party is on your to-do list when you next visit Thailand.
